Before the gastric balloon treatment, a personal conversation is held between the patient and the doctor in the Czech Republic to ensure medical information about the process and possible risks.
A small preoperative examination is also carried out on site in the Czech Republic. In addition, prior to the insertion of the gastric balloon, approval for insertion is obtained from our doctors. The patient should fast for at least 12 hours before treatment. A gastric balloon can be used with a BMI of 28 or more.

Gastric balloon treatment is not suitable for patients
- With a BMI under 28
- Those who regularly take anti-inflammatory, blood-thinning or blood-clotting/reversing medications
- You are on long-term steroid treatment
- Who have already had an abdominal operation (stomach, small intestine, large intestine) or a gynecological procedure with an incision in the lower abdomen
- With eating disorders such as bulimia or suffering from alcohol or drug addiction, as well as patients with psychiatric disorders
- Pregnant women and nursing mothers
- With inflammation in the digestive tract
- With hiatal hernia (diaphragmatic hernia)
- Serious kidney, hepatitis and lung diseases
The gastric balloon treatment:
The insertion of a gastric balloon takes place as an inpatient with an ambulant hospital stay in the Czech Republic. Local anesthesia is effectively supported by the precisely dosed intravenous administration of painkillers and sedatives.
In this way, you will experience the operation completely free of fear and stress while sleeping lightly. Before the soft plastic balloon is inserted into the stomach, the doctor examines the stomach endoscopically.
If there are no abnormalities, the unfilled gastric balloon is inserted through the mouth and esophagus. In the event that a gastric ulcer is detected in the stomach during gastroscopic examination, or a more severe form of gastritis (inflammation of the stomach), or an extensive diaphragmatic hernia, the insertion of the gastric balloon is not carried out in this treatment and the procedure is postponed until after the healing of the stomach ulcer moved.
The gastric balloon is then filled with saline solution using a tube and catheter. The gastric balloon is closed using a self-sealing valve.
The gastric balloon is removed endoscopically no later than twelve months after implantation. In addition to the gastric balloon treatment, it is recommended to change your diet as well as your eating and exercise habits. You will receive a plan tailored specifically to you.
After gastric balloon surgery
If there are no serious side effects, the patient will be discharged home. When discharged from the clinic, the patient receives sufficient medication and the ward’s contact number. He will also receive written instructions on behavioral and dietary measures for the next few days after the procedure.
Risks and possible complications:
The first few days will be uncomfortable as your stomach needs to get used to the balloon.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating and cramps are possible. In individual cases it can happen that the balloon in the stomach becomes damaged and loses the saline solution. A color additive in the saline solution causes the urine to color and alerts the patient to the damage.
In this case, please inform your doctor. As a rule, the now very small balloon is excreted naturally
